Because a Great Book Has Great Illustrations

November 19, 2008

While colorful words may enchant an older child, colorful pictures are what really hold the attention of the preschool set.

There's nothing wrong with picking up a book just because it has a pretty picture on the cover.  Some of the prettiest covers end up hiding some of the best illustrated books.

Just about any Eric Carle book is a winner in our house.  The colors are always bright and the drawings just whimsical enough to be interesting.  Cara's personal favorite is The Very Hungry Caterpillar - I think she wants all of his food.

Another great illustrated book is Wonder Bear.  Written by Tao Nyeu, Wonder Bear is illustrated via silk screen with vibrant colors.  The story is great and the book was on the New York Times bestseller list.

Sometimes the book you remember from your childhood can be the best book.  Where the Wild Things Are is a classic with really interesting illustrations.  The age range is a bit older [4-8] but my daughter is two and she already loves the book.

To wrap things up, I have to suggest Max's Dragon and The Donut Chef.  Both have "odd" illustrations in that they aren't the style you typically find in a child's illustrated book.  The colors are different and the pictures have a special quality to them that kept me interested all the way through.

What are your favorite illustrated kids' book?  Which books do your kids go crazy over?
