Hilarious Humdingers for Your Whippersnapper

November 22, 2008

I love this month's Savvy Source theme [Because a Great Book...] because I've loved reading all of my life and want to share that love with my kids.

A great book can take you anywhere in [or out of] the world that you want to go.  You can be anyone or anything that you want to be and the whole affair can usually fit in an over sized pocket.

Humor/funny/silly books are wonderful ways to expose young kids to books in a way that appeals to their developing sense of humor.  Also, it's fun so the kids don't even realize that they're doing something educational.

The Funny Little Woman is set in Japan and tells the story of a "woman who likes to laugh" and the mishaps that befall her when she's making dumplings.  The illustrations are awesome and the story keeps moving just fast enough to keep your kid laughing and engaged.

That's Not Funny cracks me up.  The pictures look like something from a 1960's advertisement and the story, while funny, teaches the importance of not laughing at others' misfortunes.

Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb is a classic and also a favorite around our house.  All the monkeys "drumming on drums" makes Cara laugh every time and also provides a way for her to interact with the book.

Last but not least is A Bunny is Funny.  I personally think that it's aimed at kids younger than the age of four [the starting suggested age for the book] since the sentences are very simple and the illustrations are very big.

I think the most important thing to remember is that if your kids think a book is funny, they're much less likely to view reading as a chore.  Once you have 'em hooked with the funny stuff then the serious stuff is a bit easier to take.
