Great Memphis Books for your kids

November 25, 2008

It's really easy to forget about what a great and historic place Memphis is.

Elvis, Chucalissa, The Mighty Mississippi...I could go on and on.  [But I won't.]

I think it's really important that our kids know about that history and all that this region has to offer so here are a couple of books about the Mid-South region to share with your tikes.

Who Was Elvis Presley?  - This is one of those "Who Was..." books that are really popular with kids right now.  It's written by a writer for The Boston Globe but the yankee does a pretty good job of summing up Elvis's life while maintaining some of Elvis's Southern charm.

The Choctaws - There are people who have lived in Memphis for their whole lives and they have never heard of Chucalissa.  So, to make sure that your kids don't become "those people" give them this book to get them acquainted with this region's oldest residents.

Ol' man river has influenced many a song, book and tall tale.  Most young kids [and lots of adults] don't give the Mississippi River a second look and they definitely don't wonder about all that the river does for Memphis.  Read The Mighty Mississippi to clue your kids into all that is cool about the fourth longest river in the world.

I looked and looked for a kid's cookbook for BBQ and unfortunately I guess that authors don't think that fire and wood and raw meat really go too well with little kids.

If you can think of any really great Memphis books that I haven't mentioned, let me know and I'll add them so that everyone who reads this blog can get an idea on just how cool this region is.
